KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 31

Bangladesh defended their SAFF Women's Championship title, defeating host Nepal 2-1 in a closely contested final at Dasarath Stadium in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu on Wednesday evening.

Following a goalless first half, Bangladesh's Monica Chakma opened the scoring in the 52nd minute. Nepal responded swiftly, with Amisha Karki equalizing just four minutes later, igniting hopes for the home team. However, Bangladesh regained control in the 81st minute when Ritu Porna Chakma's cross from the left flank slipped past Nepal's goalkeeper, sealing a 2-1 victory for the visitors.

Despite Nepal's efforts, they couldn't alter the score in the remaining nine minutes and added time. This win marks Bangladesh's second consecutive SAFF title, following their initial victory in 2022, which was also against Nepal.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli presented the championship trophy and medals to the teams, with other dignitaries, including Deputy Prime Minister Prakashman Singh and Youth and Sports Minister Tejulal Chaudhary, also in attendance.

Nepal's defeat in the final extends their SAFF misfortunes, marking their sixth runner-up finish-four losses to India and now two to Bangladesh. Nepal had advanced to the final after a dramatic penalty shootout win over five-time champions India, while Bangladesh secured their spot with a decisive 7-1 victory against Bhutan in the semi-final.
