Barcelona beat Alcoyano

Madrid, November 14:

Thierry Henry, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Bojan Krkic scored and FC Barcelona beat third-division Alcoyano 3-0 in a first-leg match of the fourth round of the Copa del Rey on Tuesday.

Third-division Denia drew cup holder Sevilla 1-1, and Athletic Bilbao came from behind for a 2-2 draw at first-division Hercules.

Henry swiped the ball into goal in the 25th minute after reaching Andres Iniesta’s no-look backheel inside the area. The Catalan club put away the game in the last five minutes; Gudjohnsen scoring his first of the campaign from the penalty spot before Krkic knocked in Xavi Hernandez’s long-range cross at the far post on the stroke of injury time.

At Denia’s Nou Camp stadium, substitute Ernesto Chevanton finally put Sevilla in front with his header in the 76th, only for Pablo Vidal to reply a minute later from a corner kick.

Hercules took a two-goal lead into halftime thanks to Miguel Angel Llera and Alvaro Camara, then Athletic scored twice in five minutes through Fernando Llorente in the 72nd before former Chelsea defender Asier del Horno tied it.

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard fielded a near full strength team for the match, with defender Rafael Marquez returning to the backline and nearly scoring from a free kick in the seventh. Barcelona predictably created most of the chances at the El Callao, Gudjohnsen shooting wide of the far post in the 42nd and 50th.

Barcelona forward Giovani Dos Santos was stretchered off early in the second half with an apparent ankle injury. Alcoyano, reduced to nine men in injury time, threatened but came close only in the 22nd when Barcelona backup goalkeeper Albert Fortia denied a long-range header.
