CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Barcelona, Arsenal advance to semis

London, April 6:

FC Barcelona is back in the semi-finals of Champions League. Arsenal is there for the first time.

Ronaldinho, who earlier missed a penalty for the Spanish champions, scored in the 19th minute on Wednesday to help Barcelona to a 2-0 win over Benfica and a spot in the last four after a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Arsenal advanced after holding Italian champion Juventus to a 0-0 draw in Turin and winning 2-0 on aggregate.

In the semi-finals later this month, Barcelona will face AC Milan, while Arsenal takes on Villarreal.

Ronaldinho tapped in the deciding goal at Camp Nou after Samuel Eto’o rolled a pass across the front of the net from the right. In the fifth minute, the Brazilian had a chance to give his team the lead but his penalty was saved by Benfica goalkeeper Moretto. Barcelona was given the spot kick because Benfica midfielder Armando Petit handled the ball in the area. Eto’o added a goal in the 89th, letting the ball hit his chest and then the ground before sending it into the net. Barcelona dominated much of the match, and nearly scored in the 40th minute when Mark van Bommel’s shot from close range was saved by Moretto’s foot.

Simao Sabrosa had a good chance for Benfica in the 61st, but his shot went wide. In the 87th, Giorgos Karagounis gave Benfica another chance but Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes made the save.

Barcelona won its only European Cup title in 1992, with current Benfica coach Ronald Koeman scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Sampdoria in the final. The team last made the semi-finals in 2002 but lost to Real Madrid.

Arsenal had never before reached the semi-finals of Europe’s top competition. The English team won the first leg of the quarterfinals 2-0, and only needed to keep Juventus from winning by two goals on Wednesday.

Arsenal had a pair of chances in the second half, but Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon stopped shots from Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas - the goalscorers in the first leg.

Juventus had a goal from David Trezeguet disallowed in the 32nd when he tapped in a pass from Pavel Nedved because the Czech Republic midfielder was ruled offside.

Nedved was sent off in the 77th minute after fouling Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue. It was his second yellow card.
