Climbing Sport C’ships next month

Kathmandu, March 29

Nepal Climbing Sport Association and Pasang Lhamu Academy are jointly organising the Suman Bhomjan Memorial Sport Climbing National Championship here at the Pasang Lhamu Sport Climbing Centre on May 2.

The tournament features two categories — Lead Climbing Competition and Top Rope Competition, informed NCSA General Secretary Megha Raj Poudyal at a press meet today. “We are organising this championship in memory of sports journalist Suman Bhomjan who lost his life in the 2015 devastating earthquake,” said Poudyal.

More than 100 players are expected to take part in the championship which is supported by Youth and Sports Ministry, National Sports Council, Nepal Olympic Committee, Nepal Sports Journalists Forum and Mountain Sports Federation.

A total of 55 players will participate in the Lead Climbing Competition which features men’s and women’s sections. Top three players in both categories will receive Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. “Apart from the cash rewards, the winners of the Lead Climbing Competition will be selected for the 18th Asian Games and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. As the participation of Sport Climbing in Asiad and Olympics is not confirmed, the NCSA will take initiation and start lobbying with National Sports Council and Nepal Olympic Committee,” said Poudyal.

Likewise, around 60 players are expected to take part in the Top Rope Competition and the winners will get medals and certificates in this category, informed Poudyal. “We have included this category to bring in more players in sport climbing,” Poudyal added.

NCSA President Hari Prasad Dharel thanked the supporters of the championship and requested all to make the event a grand success.
