Madrid, January 19:

Gramenet advanced to the Copa del Rey quarter-finals for the first time despite a 1-0 loss at second-division Lleida. Lleida midfielder Andres Santos scored the only goal in the 38th minute of the second-leg match, but it wasn’t enough to stop Gramenet from advancing 2-1 on aggregate. The Catalan giantkiller, which is in 12th place in Spain’s regional third division, has also eliminated FC Barcelona and Levante on its surprise march into the last eight of Spain’s knockout competition.

Gramenet survived the dismissal of midfielder Xavier Gracia toward the end of an aggressive encounter, which saw 14 yellow cards issued. In another match, Sevilla downed second-division Recreativo Huelva 2-1 at home to advance 4-1 on aggregate. Sevilla, which hasn’t won the Copa del Rey since 1948, received a scare when Recreativo striker Xavi Jimenez reduced the overall deficit when he shot home after his penalty had been parried by goalkeeper Antonio Notario.

However, central defender Pablo Ruiz calmed Sevilla’s nerves by leveling with a 60th-minute header from a free kick. Substitute Carlos Aranda then gave the first-division team an unassailable lead with a fierce shot 14 minutes later.
