Greenland, TIA claim trophies

KATHMANDU: Hosts Greenland and Trungram International Academy (TIA) claimed the fourth Kwik's Greenland Inter-school Basketball Championships here today.

Greenland recorded a narrow 15-13 win over Deep Jyoti in the Junior Boys' final with Milan Puri contributing 10 points alone for the winners.

Defending champions Valley Public beat Prithvi School 21-10 to win the third-place decider. Umesh Pun of the Greenland was adjudged the most valuable player (MVP) in the Junior Boys' category. Pun's teammate Prajwol Gurung ended up as the highest scorer with 65 points.

In the Senior Boys' final, Buddha Gurung and Anish Shahi netted 10 points apiece as TIA saw off Golden Peak 26-23. Gyan Niketan finished third after Valley Public failed to report. Anish Shahi of TIA won the MVP award while Shanker Lama of Golden Peak finished the top scorer. Lama scored a total of 75 points.

Nepal Basketball Association President Lama Tendi Sherpa gave away the prizes. In all, 17 teams in Junior and 16 in Senior Boys' section took part in the tournament.

Monsoon Meet

KATHMANDU: Rato Bangala and Kantipur advanced to the Senior Girls' semi-finals at the fifth Monsoon Meet Basketball Tournament here on Friday.

Rato Bangala sneaked to a 16-15 win over hosts Sridiwa while Kantipur dispatched Brihaspati 35-10 riding on Ronali Limbu's 16 points. Joining them in the last four were Shuvatara and Teresa.

Shuvatara defeated Galaxy Public 25-18 and Teresa overcame Pennwood Academy 28-21. Kantipur will take on Rato Bangala and Shuvatara will face Teresa for places in the final.

Galaxy, Arunodaya, Sridiwa and Gyanodaya made it to the semi-finals in the Junior Boys' section. Galaxy beat Excelsior 35-25, Arunodaya eased past Brihaspati 34-28, Sridiwa beat Young Heart 25-20 and Gyanodaya saw off New Shrine 40-27.
