Chand to lead Cricket Association of Nepal for four more years
KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 23
The elective general assembly of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) today elected Chatur Bahadur Chand as president for the third term, while former national team skipper Paras Khadka got the responsibility of secretary.
Chand, vice-president Roshan Bahadur Singh and Treasurer Padam Khadka were elected unanimously along with three members Jayanti Bhatta (woman), Pradeep Majgaiyan (Lumbini) and Sridhar KC (Karnali).
Khadka defeated former acting secretary Prashant Bikram Malla by 11 votes for the post of secretary. Out of the total 85 votes, Khadka earned 48, while Malla got 37.
The most successful skipper in the history of Nepali cricket, Khadka vowed to work for the betterment of cricket for the next four years. "We will work as a unit for the overall development of cricket and our first priority would be to set up the domestic structure," said Khadka, who entered the managerial role of cricket as the member of the Kathmandu District Cricket Association before becoming the president of Bagmati Province Cricket Association.
"We have a lot of works to do in the next four years and we will sit together to formulate plans and programs from the next board meeting," said Khadka, who led the national team to the T20 World Cup in THT 2014 apart from setting number of records on the way to team's journey from World Cricket League Division-V to Division-II and One Day International status.
In the elections for province members, Diwakar Ghale (Bagmati) beat Sudip Piya by 10 votes, while Sudeep Sharma (Gandaki) defeated Devendra Praju. Bikram Bista (Sudurpashchim) earned 49 votes against his opponent Hari Regmi's 21, whereas and Arjun Paudel (Koshi) garnered 47 votes to beat Sunil Kumar Paudel. In Madhesh Province elections, Madhav Karmacharya won in lucky draw against Mohammad Daud Ansari after they earned 42 votes each.
A total of 15 candidates ran for the post of five members in open category. Dhirendra Saud received the most number of votes earning 59, while Durga Raj Pathak (54), Ayush Shrestha (51) and Birendra Bahadur Chand were the other three members to be elected. Karan Mahatara Chhetri was elected as the fifth member on lucky draw after he was tied on 26 votes with Rishi Ram Gautam.
President Chand also vowed to set up domestic structure and also organise Nepal Premier League. "We will seriously work for setting up a strong domestic structure, which we could not do in the previous term due to various reasons. And we will also take concrete decision regarding the Nepal Premier League," Chand said.
