Mauresmo upset; Belgians advance

Sydney, January 10:

Second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo was bounced out of the Sydney International on Tuesday, while Belgians Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin-Hardenne cruised into the quarter-finals.

After a bye in the first round Mauresmo, in her first match since winning the season-ending WTA Championships in November, was upset 6-3, 7-5 by Ana Ivanovic of Serbia-Montenegro in the second. Mauresmo struggled with her own serve and Ivanovic’s booming forehand. Ivanovic next faces sixth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 2004 US Open winner, who led Dinara Safina 6-3 when her fellow Russian withdrew because of blisters on her left foot.

Top-seeded Clijsters beat China’s Li Na 6-3, 6-1, and the fifth-seeded Henin-Hardenne cruised past Russia’s Vera Dushevina 6-2, 6-2. Henin-Hardenne’s quarter-final opponent is Italy’s Francesca Schiavone, who won 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 over China’s Yan Zi. Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova ousted third-seeded Patty Schynder 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to set up a quarter-final against No 8 Nicole Vaidisova, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Yuliana Fedak.
