Nepal defeat India, win team title

Kathmandu, November 16

Nepali team defeated visiting Indian team to win the 10th Gaekwad invitational Golf Tournament title at the Gokarna Golf Club today.

The home side earned 39.5 points, while India scored 22 in the annual tournament played between the two teams. Out of the total 28 matches played over the two days, Nepal won 16, while five each matches were halved and byes. The Indian team won seven matches, while five were halved with six byes.

Raman Singh and Col Avaneesh Chambial of India and Nepal’s Suhrid Ghimire and Gopal Chitrakar were the best winning pairs on the first and second day respectively. Devendra Bajgai and Rekha Ghimire won the closest-to-the-pin awards, while Rashid Ali and Gaurav Brar bagged the longest drive awards. Maj Gen Gajendra Limbu and Kanchan Basnyat received the straightest drive awards.

A separate tournament was organised for women and guest golfers on the sidelines of the main event. Devasri Rana won the women’s section title with 36 points, while Prativa Rai came second with 34 points. Sushil Shahi claimed the guest section trophy with 40 points, while Dr Shambhu Ram Simkhada was runner-up with 26 points. Myanmar Ambassador Thiri Pyanchi U Tun Nay Lin was the winner among ambassadors.

Princess of Baroda, Asha Raje Gaekwad, and Kamala Thapa gave away the prizes to the winners of the tournament. A total of 70 golfers took part in the tournament.
