Nepal thrash Hong Kong, lift ACC U-19 Eastern Region Qualifiers title

KATHMANDU: Nepal thrashed Hong Kong by five-wicket to lift the title of ACC U-19 Asia Cup Qualifiers-Eastern Region played at the Kinarara Oval in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, on Sunday.

With today's victory, Nepal qualified for the ACC U-19 Asia Cup to be held in Malaysia later in November this year. Nepal will play against the test playing sides of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Nepal undefeated team in the tournament, played to their strength as they opted to field first after winning the toss, in a bowler friendly pitch.

Nepali bowlers have done a favour to the batsmen as they have restricted their opponents in low scores, however, batsmen have failed to match their bowlers in batting performance, at times, showing their batting frailties even chasing low scores.

Hong Kong, one of Nepal's foes in recent tournaments, failed to score a challenging total to give any chance to their bowlers to defend.

However, they managed to muster a meagre 76 all out in just 33 overs.

Harpreet Singh top scored for Hong Kong with 20 runs and Waqas Khan contributed 15 runs to the total.

Nepal's leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane and Shahab Alam shared 6 wickets between them to destroy Hong Kong's inning for 23 runs. Hong Kong lost the batting momentum from the word go as they lost opener Raag Kapur in the very first over.

Skipper Dipendra Singh Airee and Anil Kumar Sah chipped in with a wicket apiece.

Sandeep Lamichhane was the chief destroyer as he claimed three precise wickets for just 8 runs in his spell.

In reply, Nepal's Asif Sheikh and Sandeep Sunar failed to replicate their sensational semi-finals batting performance, as Sheikh trudged back to pillion by opening his account.

Nepal's top oder batsman Sandeep Sunar hit 19 runs, Anil Kumar Sah made 16 runs and captain Dipendra Singh Airee chipped in with 22 runs in the winning cause.

Pranit Thapa ensured Nepal's victory with a assured knock of 19 runs as wickets tumbled to fall from other end and achieved the target within 15 overs.

Hong Kong's Karnadeep Singh picked three Nepali wickets for 45 runs and Jhathavedh claimed two wickets.

With today's victory, Nepal will return to Malaysia to play ACC U-19 Asian Cup to be held in November.

Earlier, Nepal defeated the host Malaysia by 10-wicket and Hong Kong ensured their meeting with the Himalayan nation after seeing off Singapore in other semi-finals.
