Kathmandu, February 7
Hongwanji New Diamond Youth Sports Club won the title of the sixth KNP Nerolac National Women's Volleyball Tournament here at the NSC covered hall today.
New Diamond edged past fivetime defending champions Nepal APF Club 3-2 in the final of the tournament for their second win in two days. New Diamond had defeated APF 3-1 in the last league match yesterday.
New Diamond fought hard to take the first set 28-26 before APF won the second set 25-19 to level the scores at 1-1. New Diamond restored the lead with a 25-22 win in the third set but APF levelled the scored for the second time when the departmental side claimed the fourth set 26-24. New Diamond won the fifth and deciding set 15-9 to complete the victory.
Along with the title, New Diamond received Rs 300,000, while runners-up APF got Rs 150,000.
Pragati Nath of New Diamond was named the player of the match and she earned Rs 10,000.
Nepal Police Club finished third after they beat departmental rivals Tribhuvan Army Club 25-21, 25-21, 25-13. NPC earned Rs 75,000. Usha Bhandari of NPC was named the player of the match and she got Rs 10,000. New Diamond's Pratibha Mali was declared the best player of the tournament and she received Rs 50,000. New Diamond trio Pragati Nath, Salina Shrestha and Kumar Rai were named the best setter, libero and coach respectively.
APF's Niruta Thagunna, Hira KC and Saraswati Chaudhary were declared the spiker, blocker and server respectively. Salina Budha Magar was named the emerging player The best individuals received Rs 15,000 each.
A total of four teams took part in the tournament organised by Sher Bahadur Khadka Memorial Foundation under the sponsorship of KNP Nerolac paints.
Bagmati Province Sports Development Council Member Secretary Surya Lal Bhandari, Nepal Volleyball Association President Jitendra Bahadur Chand and Olympian Deepak Bista among others handed over the prizes to the winners.
