KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 15

Nepal Police Club thrashed Kirtipur Municipality 78-23 in women's section match, while Times Basketball Club and Golden Gate International College recorded victories in men's category of the Lama Tendi Sherpa Memorial Basketball Championship here at the NSC covered hall today.

NPC dominated the match against Kirtipur, who were not able to open their accounts in the first quarter and could score in double figures only in third period.

NPC opened with a 21-0 lead in the first period and took the second quarter 25-6 to extend the lead to 39 points going into the half time. Kirtipur managed to open their account when the NPC had already netted 32 points.

The departmental side took the third period 18-10 and completed the formality winning the last quarter 15-7.

Samikshya Neupane netted 11 points for NPC, while Jharana Bajracharya of Kirtipur scored more than half of the team total scoring 13 points.

In men's section, Times outplayed Xavier International 117-64. Bijay Burja of Times top scored in the match with 24 points, while Rahul Nayak contributed 14 for Xavier. Times opened with a 35-16 before Xavier reduced the deficit taking the second quarter 20-13. Times then did not let Xavier play freely and won the third quarter 31-15 before taking the final period 38-13.

In another match, Golden Gate registered a 77-74 victory over NCCS riding on 32 points from Abhishek Singh.

Golden Gate bounced back strongly in the final quarter to walk away with a win in a thrilling match. NCCS took a 21-18 lead in the first period and extended it to six points by taking the second quarter 16-13. Both the teams netted 20 points each in the third quarter before Golden Gate won the final period 26-17 to edge past NCCS.

A total of 13 teams are taking part in the men's section, while five teams are competing in women's category of the 11-day championship organised by Nepal Basketball Association to pay tribute to its former president Lama Tendi Sherpa.

Top two teams in both categories will receive Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively.
