Records tumble on final day
Lalitpur, September 19:
Karishma Karki and Chandra Singh Mahato broke national records on the final day of the 10th Galaxy Cup Open and Age-group Swimming Championship here today.
Karki, who won a total of seven gold medals, shattered Nayana Shakya’s record of 1 minute 21.96 seconds in 100m butterfly on her way to win the gold medal with the timing of 1:21.87. Karki also broke 200m freestyle national record on Thursday.
Mahato bettered his own mark in the 50m butterfly when he completed the distance in 28.53 seconds, 0.05 seconds ahead of his previous mark. Karki received Rs 10,000 for breaking two national records, while Mahato bagged Rs 5,000.
Karishma also bagged gold medals in the 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle. Shailesh Rana also won the 100m breaststroke gold medal, while Olympian Prasiddha Jung Shah bagged the 50m freestyle gold medal.
In Age-group, Little Angels’ School claimed the team championship with 169 points, while Shuvatara and Baba came second and third respectively.
A total of 259 swimmers — 51 in Open and 208 in Age-group sections — took part in the championship organised by Nepal Swimming Association.
