Sharada wins 3,000m gold
KATHMANDU: Sharada Bhandari won the girls' 3000m gold medal at the first President Running Shield Districtwide Inter-school Tournament here at the Dasharath Stadium today.
Bhandari completed the race in 13 minutes 13.39 seconds, ahead of fellow Bijeshwori schoolmate Mina Thapa (13:39.69), while Santoshi Shrestha came third in 15:55.18. Buddha Kumar Ghising of Gyanodaya captured the boys' section first place with the timing of 10:51.03, while Deepak Chaudhary (11:03.05) of Gurukul and Rajan Thapa (11:30.04) of APF came second and third.
In boys' Long Jump, Neeraj Bista of Prithvi School won the gold medal with a distance of 5.10 metres, while Bharat Gurung (4.86m) of Deep Jyoti and Jeevan Bal (4.67m) of Indra Dhanush came second and third. Sujana Devkota of Deep Jyoti claimed the girls' section gold with the distance of 3.59m, ahead of Bijeshwori duo Pratigya Bhandari (3.53m) and Asmita Karki (3.32m).
Narahari Gautam of Deep Jyoti won the boys' triple jump gold medal with the distance of 10.45 metres, ahead of Dhruba Baniya (10.27m) of Tilingtar and Prakash KC (10.02m) of New Children. Gyani Chunara claimed her second gold of the tournament when she added the girls' triple jump medal at 8.05 metres. Sujana Devkota (8.04m) of Deep Jyoti and Ramila Tandukar (7.78m) of New Diamond came second and third. Chunara had won the 100m race on the first day of the championship on Sunday.
Parbat Shrestha of Deep Jyoti claimed the boys' 400m race gold medal, ahead of Neeraj Nepal of APF and Saroj Thali of New Horizon. Jasmina Maharjan of Kanya Mandir, Sunita Gurung of Guheshwori and Sashi Acharya of Bijeshwori claimed the top three spots in girls' 400m race.
In boys' javelin throw, Akash Chhantyal of Kamana School came first with the throw of 33.97 metres, whereas Umesh Shahi of Mangal School claimed silver at 31.50m and Binod Thapa Magar bagged bronze at 27.95m. Urmila Maharjan (15.07m) of Kanya Mandir, Tara Ghale (15.40m) of Deep Jyoti and Srijana Ghimire (13.10m) of Kanya Mandir claimed the top three spots in the girls' javelin throw. The athletics championship will conclude on Wednesday.
In boys' volleyball tournament, Kamana School beat National Academy 25-6, 25-16 and Kirtipur School came from behind to defeat Tilingatar School 21-25, 25-13, 25-16. In girls' section, Deep Jyoti beat Awareness International Academy 25-9, 25-11, while Gyan Sudha School earned walkove win from Guheshwori School.
