South Siders, Prime claim Morgan Cup titles

Kathmandu, July 4

South Siders and Prime Club lifted the titles of the Morgan Cup 12th Women’s and 13th Men’s National Basketball Championship here today.

In the men’s section final, South Siders thumped Golden Gate Club 91-78. Golden Gate began with a seven-point lead when they won the first quarter 21-14. South Siders reduced the deficit to six by winning the second period 24-23, before they went ahead in the third quarter and registered a comprehensive victory. South Siders won the third quarter 27-18 and took the final period 26-16. Bijay Burja top scored for South Siders with 27 points, while Siddhartha Maharjan netted 24 points for Golden Gate.

In women’s final, Prime thumped White House 57-47. Prime took the first quarter 10-7 and lost 17-19 in the second. Prime dominated the third and fourth periods, winning them 12-6 and 18-15 respectively. Luniva Singh top scored for Prime with 21 points, while Anusha Malla netted 18 points for White House. Singh and Burja won the Most Valuable Player awards of the tournament.

CPN-UML leader Gokarna Bista, President of Nepal Basketball Association Lama Tendi Sherpa, Vice-president of Nepal Olympic Committee Purendra Bikram Lakhe among others handed over the prizes. A total of 13 teams — eight in men’s and six in women’s sections — had took part in the event.
