Swann stars as England restrict Australia
LONDON: England's Graeme Swann claimed his first five-wicket haul in one-day international cricket as Australia were bowled out for the lowest total of this one-day series here on Sunday.
The spinner took 5-28 as Australia were dismissed for 178 leaving England requiring just 179 runs to avoid becoming the first team in history to lose an ODI series 7-0.
Swann started with a maiden wicket to remove the dangerously set Ricky Ponting and begin a collapse which saw Australia subside from 96-2.
Ponting had added 59 with Michael Clarke in a partnership of real contrasts as Australia rebuilt after an excellent new-ball partnership from James Anderson and ODI debutant Graeme Onions.
Ponting was in elegant form from the moment he punched a drive off Anderson for the day's first boundary. The second came from the next ball, casually flipped off his legs.
Vice-captain Clarke was in far scratchier form, taking 31 deliveries to find the ropes and another 32 to repeat the feat.
But once Ponting went for 53 in Swann's first over, the rest quickly followed. The left-hander mistimed a drive and presented a catch to Paul Collingwood at mid-on, the first of three wickets in 24 balls.
Clarke was run out by Eoin Morgan's throw from short fine leg and Cameron White played onto a ball which turned into him.
James Hopes played across the line and spooned a return catch to Swann and Mitchell Johnson tried to turn him to leg having hit the previous ball for four, and was caught by Anderson to complete Swann's haul.
On a turning pitch, Owais Shah claimed the seventh wicket of his ODI career when Nathan Hauritz offered a return catch to his occasional spin.
Tim Bresnan completed the innings when he had Mike Hussey caught one short of his half-century. The tone had been set by Anderson and Onions, who claimed a wicket each as Australia were restricted to 32-2 in the first ten-over powerplay.
