Tarun Sangh enter Aaha Gold Cup second round

Pokhara, February 22:

Tarun Sangh of Kolkata entered the second round of the fifth Aaha Gold Cup football tournament after beating Himalayan Sherpa Club of Kathmandu 3-1 in tiebreaker here on Thursday.

The match was extended to the tiebreaker after a 2-2 deadlock in the 120 minutes of play. Earlier, Deepak Thapa put Himalayan Sherpa ahead in the 10th minute but Sukumar Dey levelled the scores for the visitors four minutes after the break, extending the game to another 30 minutes of play.

Dey scored his second goal 13th minute into the extra time but Amar Pun equalised for the Himalayan Sherpa two minutes later. Tarun Sangh goalie Rana Chakrawarti saved three spot kicks to ensure the second round berth for his team. Chakrawarti denied Kiran Kapali, Binay Chaudhary and Kamal Bista in the tiebreaker.

Only Jivan Sinkeman converted for Himalayan Sherpa Club. Goddy, Sukumar Dey and Samik Chakrawarti scored for the visitors. Martin missed the penalty for the visiting team. Sukumar Dey won the man of the match award.

Himalayan Sherpa coach Rajendra KC said that the physical strength was the only difference between the teams. “They (Tarun Sangh) cashed on to their physical advantage to win the match,” added KC.

Tarun Sangh coach Dilal Dey praised Himalayan Sherpa for their game but lamented two close chances when they hit the woodwork.

An assembled English team Sahara UK will take on Knight Chess Club of Jhapa on Friday.
