KATHMANDU: Elite Co-Ed and Unique School won their respective junior boys’ matches at the first Suryodaya Valleywide Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Tuesday. Elite beat hosts Suryodaya Jyoti ‘A’ 18-10 and Unique edged past Jagat Mandir 18-13. Trungram International Academy overwhelmed New Summit 24-4 in another junior boys’ match. In the senior girls’ section, Gyan Niketan thrashed Golden Peak 24-4, Suryodaya beat New Summit 19-2 and Learning Realm International defeated Asian Public 24-17. — HNS

Chess tourney begins

LALITPUR: Minister for Education and Sports Mohan Singh Rathaur inaugurated the first Shankhadhar Shakhwa Memorial Nationwide Open Chess Tournament, to be played in a Swiss League format. In all, 90 men and 33 women are taking part in the event organised by Nepal Chess Association. National Sports Council member secretary Jeevan Ram Shrestha said the NSC has provided Rs 120,000 for the event. — HNS

Lubhoo School win

KATHMANDU: Lubhoo School won the fourth Valleywide Namuna Running Shield Volleyball Tournament. Lubho bounced back from a set down to beat CGA 23-25, 25-12, 25-13, 25-23. The winners received Rs 4,000 while the runners up got Rs 2,000. Kopila beat Mt Olive 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 in the third-place match. Bikash Nemkul of CGA was declared the best player of the tournament while Sagar Shrestha of Namuna School was adjudged the rising star. — HNS
