Army claim 16 golds in ITF Taekwondo

Jhapa, December 27

Tribhuvan Army Club dominated the ITF Taekwondo under the seventh National Games with 16 gold medals in Damak today.

TAC also won four silvers and two bronze medals to finish the team champions. Nepal APF Club were a distant second with three each gold and silver medals and a bronze, while Eastern Region came third with three gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Central Region and Western Region claimed two gold medals each, while Mid-western returned with two silver and four bronze medals and Far-western won six bronze medals.

On the final day of the competition that offered a total of 27 gold medals, TAC finished first in Group Pattern ahead of Central in men’s section, while Central and TAC finished one-two in women’s category.

Gymnastics

Nepal APF Club won the women’s team floor event gold medal with a total of 77.45 points on the first day of the Gymnastics today. Central Region came second with 71.35 points, while Mid-western were third with 42.45 points. A total of 72 players from six teams are taking part in the tournament.

Boxing

Tribhuvan Army Club boxers continued their dominance in the seventh National Games at the Mechi Stadium. A total of 16 TAC boxers made it to the finals with 10 players advancing to the gold medal bouts today. Likewise, five boxers from APF made it to the final, while four from Central and one from Nepal Police Club advanced to the final.

TAC boxers Deepak Shrestha (64kg), Bishnu Prasad Ghale (69kg), Dipesh Lama (75kg), Mahendra KC (81kg), Shyam Khadka (91kg), Aashish Dawadi (above-91), Niru Gurung (57kg), Sonam Rokka (60kg), Poonam Rawal (64kg) and Shilu Dangol (75kg) entered the finals today.

Likewise, Nepal APF Club boxers who made it to the final included Bikash Lama (69kg), Maya Chaduhary (57kg), Saraswati Rana Magar (60kg), Binita Thapa Magar (64kg) and Sangita Guragain (69kg). Diwaslal Bhumi (75kg), Manohar Basnet (81kg), Kabiras Sharma (91kg) and Megh Denial Lama (above-91kg) entered the finals from Central Region, while Bhupendra Thapa (64kg) was the lone NPC boxer in final.

Badminton

Nangsal Devi Tamang of TAC and Sichhya Shrestha of Nepal APF Club entered the women’s singles final of the badminton tournament under the seventh National Games in Kakarvitta today. Tamang defeated her TAC teammate Anu Maya Rai 21-15, 21-12, while Shrestha came from behind to beat TAC shuttler Amita Giri 20-22, 21-13, 22-20 in the three-set thriller.

In men’s singles, TAC’s Ratnajit Tamang and Dipesh Dhami entered the semi-finals along with Kanjib Khadka of Far-western Region and Bishnu Katwal of NPC. In men’s doubles, TAC duo of Tamang/Nabin Shrestha and Dhami/Suraj Maharjan made it to the semis along with NPC’s Deepak Bohara/Katwal, and APF’s Joseph Adhikari/Suman Limbu. Likewise, three pairs of TAC and APF advanced to the women’s doubles semi-finals, while two pairs each from TAC and APF made it to the mixed doubles semis.

Table Tennis

NPC’s Shyantu Shrestha won the men’s singles gold medal in the table tennis event beating APF’s Shiva Sundar Gothe 12-10, 11-7, 8-11, 11-4, 5-11, 11-9 at the Shahid Stadium in Biratnagar. NPC’s Nabita Shrestha defeated her teammate Alina Maharjan 11-0, 11-8, 10-12, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8.
