China announces 7.5 pct jump in defense spending
BEIJING: China says it will boost its defense budget by 7.5 percent this year, the first time in more than 15 years it has announced less than a double-digit percentage increase.
National People's Congress spokesman Li Zhaoxing said Thursday the increase will be used to enhance China's ability "to meet various threats."
Although smaller than expected, the increase comes amid heightened concerns about China's military plans and an increased willingness by the Asian giant to show off its advanced military capabilities.
