Phoolan killer’s aide held
NEW DELHI: A close aide of Sher Singh Rana, the alleged killer of Phoolan Devi who escaped from Tihar jail in February, has been arrested by Delhi Police, officials said on Sunday. Shravan Kumar was arrested from a village in Jahanabad on Saturday night and brought to Delhi on Sunday. — HNS
4 tonnes of hashish seized
LAHORE: Police seized four tonnes of hashish from a container bound for the Netherlands in Lahore, an official said on Sunday. The seizure was made on Saturday as the container was being loaded with rice for export. The 4,010 kg of hashish was hidden in a specially built cavity and located with the help of sniffer dogs. — AP
Drunken troops thrashed
GUWAHATI: Four drunken Indian Army soldiers were mercilessly beaten by an irate crowd in Dibrugarh on Saturday on a busy street in broad daylight, officials said on Sunday. "The four soldiers are recuperating at the Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh with multiple wounds after being seriously assaulted by a furious mob for trying to molest two girls in a restaurant," a senior police officer said. "The soldiers were in a highly inebriated condition when police rescued them." — HNS
Tainted milk poisons 200
KARACHI: About 200 people were stricken by food poisoning, causing vomiting and stomach cramps, after drinking contaminated milk in a slum in Karachi, officials said on Sunday. The Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre treated about 200 people and discharged most. — AP
