Ex-ministers grilled

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s anti-corruption commission on Tuesday summoned six former ministers for questioning over corruption allegations against detained former PM Khaleda Zia. The ex-ministers from the last elected government included former finance minister Saifur Rahman.Two more ministers who are already in custody would also be quizzed in connection with the charges against Zia, and her younger son Arafat Rahman, said commission official Reba Halder. — AFP

Teacher shot dead

BANGKOK: Suspected separatist insurgents shot and killed a Buddhist teacher on Tuesday in Thailand’s restive Muslim far south, police said. Somchoke Chitkongsat, 59, a teacher at a government-run secondary school was shot while waiting for a bus to school in Yala provincial township, said police Lt Veerakij Kaewnuanjing. — AP

Court rejects appeal

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s Supreme Court has rejected the final appeals of two militants sentenced to death for bombing two nightclubs on the resort island of Bali in 2002, killing 202 people, local media reports said on Tuesday. “The panel of judges have rejected their request for a judicial review,” court spokesman Nurhadi said. — DPA

China’s warning

BEIJING: China on Tuesday said that a meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Dalai Lama had damaged ties between the two nations, and called for Berlin to quickly fix the problem. “This grossly interferes with the internal affairs of China and hurts the feelings of the Chinese people,” foreign ministry spokesman Jiang Yu said. — AFP
