KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 25

The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection (DoCSCP), the sole authorised market monitoring body of the government, has intensified its market monitoring efforts ahead of the festive season.

On Sunday alone, the department fined 39 commercial firms for selling substandard products and initiated action against those not complying with the existing laws.

A team of inspectors mobilised by the department imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on a hardware store in Balaju, Kathmandu.

Additionally, grocery shops in Bafal, Kathmandu, were fined Rs 20,000.

Furthermore, five firms were fined Rs 5,000 each, two firms were fined Rs 10,000 each, and two firms were slapped with penalties of Rs 15,000 each.

In addition to fines, seven firms were instructed to provide necessary documents, 15 firms were given general instructions, and others were asked to manage their menu cards properly.

The DoCSCP has initiated these measures to protect consumer interests and maintain a clean market environment in preparation for the festive season. The market monitoring began on September 13, and it is being carried out in coordination with relevant agencies such as the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control, Department of Drug Administration, Inland Revenue Department, Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, and District Administration Office.

Since September 13, the monitoring team has taken action against 180 firms.
