National caseload approaches half million mark

KATHMANDU, MAY 21

Nepal's Covid-19 death toll surpassed 6,000 with 177 more deaths reported on Friday. As many as 6,024 people have succumbed to the highly contagious respiratory disease across the country till date.

The number of registered recoveries in the past 24 hours was 7,890 while 8,407 more people tested positive for the novel coronavirus infection in the same period. The country's total caseload, as such, stands at 497,052.

As of today, 374,836 individuals have recovered from the novel coronavirus infection. The recovery rate from the disease stands at 75.4 per cent.

Antigen tests confirmed 200 positive cases in the past 24 hours. As such, total infections from both RT-PCR and antigen tests added up to 8,607.

The capital city recorded 1,752 infections, Lalitpur 400 cases, and Bhaktapur 295 cases today, taking the valley's total 24-hour figure to 2,447.

According to the health ministry, 23,226 total tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, of which 22,353 were PCR tests while 873 were antigen tests. With this, a total of 2,878,146 PCR tests have been carried out in Nepal till date.

Currently, there are 912 individuals in various quarantine facilities across Nepal.

On Thursday, Nepal's coronavirus case count reached 488,645 with 8,227 newly confirmed cases.

Globally, over 165 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus while 3.4 million people have lost their lives to the disease. Likewise, over 146 million people have recovered while more than 15 million cases are still active.
