KATHMANDU, JUNE 28
The monsoon is expected to advance into western Nepal over the next few days, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms across much of the country, although heatwave conditions are likely to persist in parts of the western Tarai, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) said on Sunday.
According to the department, the monsoon currently covers all of Koshi, Madhesh and Bagmati provinces, parts of Gandaki Province and eastern Lumbini. It is expected to spread across the remaining parts of Gandaki and Lumbini, as well as Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces within the next three to four days.
Despite the gradual expansion of the monsoon, heatwave conditions are forecast to continue at a few places in the western Tarai of Lumbini Province and the Tarai districts of Sudurpashchim. Nepalgunj and Dhangadhi are expected to record maximum temperatures of 37–39 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
The weather office has forecast generally cloudy conditions over the hilly and mountainous regions, while the Tarai will remain partly cloudy.
Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at a few places in Koshi Province and at some places in the hilly and mountainous regions of Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces. Similar weather is also expected in parts of Karnali and Sudurpashchim.
Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is forecast at a few places in the Tarai of Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, while isolated showers are possible in the Tarai of Sudurpashchim.
During the night, rain activity is expected to become more widespread across the country, with moderate rainfall and thunderstorms likely in many areas. The department has also warned of heavy rainfall at one or two places in the hilly and Tarai regions of Koshi Province, raising the possibility of localized flooding and landslides.
The Kathmandu Valley is likely to receive moderate rain with thundershowers during the day, with temperatures ranging between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius, while Pokhara and several eastern hill districts are also expected to witness moderate rainfall.
The department has advised the public in heatwave-affected areas to avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, while urging residents in regions forecast to receive heavy rain to remain alert for weather-related hazards, including flash floods and landslides.
