KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 17

Spokesperson for the Nepali Congress Prakash Sharan Mahat today said the ruling alliance would not project any particular leader as the next prime minister.

Speaking at a press conference here today, Mahat said there were procedures to follow before projecting someone as the next PM. "In our party we elect the parliamentary party leader among candidates who contest the PP leader election. If we get simple majority the PP leader will be the PM or else, he/she shall need the ruling alliance's support. Therefore, it is not the time to project a particular leader as the next prime minister," he added.

"At this stage we need to focus on the election. NC should try to win maximum number of seats out of 91 HoR first-pastthe-post seats and let's also try to ensure that ruling alliance wins most of the seats they are contesting," Mahat said.

He expressed confidence that the next government would be formed under the NC's leadership. He also said that it was difficult for one political party to win simple majority. "Therefore, we need to take other parties along with us," he added.

Meanwhile the top ruling coalition leaders will be reaching all the seven provinces. He said the ruling alliance needed to win votes, for which there must be good coordination between coalition partners. The process of forming coordination committees in the districts is going on.

Mahat said the party's leadership had urged rebel candidates to withdraw their candidacies and he was hopeful they would do so. He further said his party's election manifesto would be prepared within a few days and it would contain only realistic slogans. Mahat said although the election code was restrictive, his party would try to abide by it. The alliance has embraced the slogan of protection of the constitution, political stability, and prosperity. He informed that Nepal's foreign policy would be guided by the country's needs and national interest.
