Chabahil-Sankhu road expansion on cards

Kathmandu, September 11

The Chabahil-Jorpati-Sankhu road section will soon be widened for effective and smooth transportation, according to the Kathmandu Valley Road Improvement Project.

The 12km road expansion project is expected to be completed within two-and-a-half years at the cost of Rs 1.5 billion. Lakshman Devkota, engineer at KVRIP, contractor for the road expansion project would be finalized within this month.

“Houses that have been built by encroaching on the road along the Chabahil-Jorpati-Sankhu section will be demolished. Removal of illegally constructed buildings will take at least three months,” he said. He also informed that the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority will assist demolition of the illegally built houses and structures along the road section.

Water pipelines will also be laid before widening the road section. The expanded road would be 22m wide with 2m wide footpath on either side of the road. The road will also have 2m wide dividers. “The 16m carriageway will be divided into two lanes ,” he said.

The road dividers will be converted into green belt by planting ornamental herbs, shrubs, trees and Bermuda grass, while footpaths will be designed to meet the needs of pedestrians, including the differently-abled people.

Likewise, the heights and slopes of footpath will be maintained at zebra crossings and junctions for the convenience of wheel-chair users.
