Forgery racket running from medical store busted

Kathmandu, March 2

Police have arrested a person for allegedly running a forgery racket under the mask of medical store in Koteshwor.

Acting on a tip-off, a special team of undercover cops deployed from Metropolitan Police Crime Division today raided the ‘Doctor Healthcare’ operated by Udaya Thing alias Kabir Shrestha and apprehended him with a huge cache of fake government seals he used to produce and sell counterfeit documents on request of his clients.

Superintendent of Police Narendra Prasad Upreti said Thing had developed a huge network of contacts through his medical store to make ‘needy persons’ approach him for fake documents, including medical report and academic credentials, among others. Thing, 24, hails from Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City-17, Makwanpur and had been residing in Koteshwor.

Police have also confiscated a fake ID card of ‘UN Observer’ made in his name to convince others about his relations with international organisations working in Nepal. The fake seals seized from him are of Nepal Pharmacy Council; United National World Health Organisation; Shradha Institute of Health Science, Bhaktapur; Council for Technical Education & Vocational Training Office of the Controller of Examination, Nepal; Kathmandu Xavier’s Public School; and Controller of Examinations.

Police said he was charged with forging government seal and signature. MPCD has handed him over to Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, for further investigation. He will be liable to a jail term of up to one year if convicted under the existing law.

Meanwhile, police are trying to get the details of persons who obtained fake documents from Thing while searching for other suspects working as his associates. He was also found cheating people promising contracts to be awarded by Social Welfare Council and may be booked under fraud charges. Police have busted more than a dozen gangs involved in running forgery racket in Kathmandu Valley over a period of past one year.
