KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 1

The death of two 14-year-old Class IX students of Pathshala Nepal school is shrouded in mystery. They had fallen from the sixth floor of an under-construction building at Buddhanagar in Kathmandu at around 5:45 pm yesterday.

The boy, who hailed from Bihar in India, was living with his parents in Pepsicola, while the girl, a permanent resident of Kathmandu was residing in Ghattekulo with her parents.

Both were classmates studying in Grade IX at Pathshala Nepal.

They were in school uniform when the accident occurred.

They had returned home together after school yesterday, according to school teachers.

Some people who had gathered at the accident site informed the police about the incident.

Police had taken them to the nearby Civil Hospital, where they died during treatment. Police then informed their parents and the school administration.

The school was identified from the logo on the school uniform.

"We came to know about the incident after police informed us. We met their parents, but they were too traumatised and were not in a condition to speak," said Ram Prasad Gyawali, the school principal. A teacher said the two were in love, as informed by their friends. But it is not sure why and when they went into the building. Police suspect foul play at the site.

"This might be a case of suicide or an accident or there could be some involvement of a third party in the case. But, we cannot say anything about it now, as we are still investigating the case," said Deputy Superintendent of Police Nishant Srivastav, head of Metropolitan Police Circle, Baneshwor.

Similar comments were made by SP Dinesh Raj Mainali of Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, which is also investigating the case: "We cannot make any comment on this case as it will be too early to assume anything,"

Mainali said. However, another senior police officer, on condition of anonymity, told THT that they had retrieved a suicide note from the girl's bag.

"We have retrieved a letter from the girl's bag, which says she made a mistake," said the officer.

Meanwhile, the girl's body has been sent for post-mortem, while the boy's funeral was held this afternoon at Pashupati Arya Ghat.
