KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 26

Prime Minister Sushila Karki has warned that political interventions in universities are likely to increase under a system that appoints political figures as Chancellor.

Addressing the senate of Tribhuvan University (TU) here today, Prime Minister Karki stressed the need to curb unnecessary politicking by abolishing the practice of having the Prime Minister serve as Chancellor.

"It has caused delays in passing the annual policies and programmes of the universities, which is not a good practice. Universities should be made free of politics," she said.

The Prime Minister also emphasized that universities should be self-sufficient-not only academically and administratively, but also financially.

Similarly, Minister for Education, Science, and Technology and Pro-Chancellor of TU, Mahabir Pun, stated that discussions were underway with experts regarding the withdrawal of the provision appointing the Prime Minister as Chancellor, either through an ordinance or other legal mechanisms.

The TU senate decided to restructure the academic and administrative framework of the university in its policy and programme for the fiscal year 2082/83. The meeting was convened to amend certain laws, including the adoption of previously stalled policies and programmes.
