Promotion of country’s languages stressed

Kathmandu, February 20

Speakers at a programme underscored the need to protect and promote all languages spoken in the country.

For this, people from different sectors could extend help, they added.

During a seminar organised by the Nepal Academy on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day in the capital city today, Chairperson of the Language Commission Lavadev Avasthi presented  a working paper on the ‘Role of the Language Commission in protecting Mother Tongues’, while Prof Yogendra Yadav  presented a paper on ‘Mother Tongue in Education’ and Amrit Yonjan on ‘Mother Tongue and Literature’. All of them stressed on protecting the mother tongues of the country.

Inaugurating the seminar, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Jivan Bahadur Sahi said the government would extend utmost assistance for the development and promotion of mother language.

“The government formed the Language Commission to get a report with solid recommendation on mother languages,” he reminded.

Nepal Academy Chancellor Ganga Prasad Uprety said systematic plans were set to promote mother tongues.

Similarly, Vice-Chancellor Bishnu Bibhu Ghimire said atmosphere was being created to settle the pressing issues relating to mother tongues, which has emerged for some years in the country.

Various persons recited poems in 45 languages on the occasion.
