KATHMANDU, MAY 18
Visiting Executive Director of the United Nations Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at the latter's official residence in Baluwatar today.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Oli thanked him for participating in the first edition of the Sagarmatha Sambaad (Dialogue). "In the absence of protection for mountains and the environment, the very existence of human life becomes insecure," he stated, adding that this should be a matter of global concern.
The Prime Minister also expressed concern over the apparent intent of some developed nations to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. He emphasized that the protection of Sagarmatha-the pride of Nepal-and other mountain ecosystems must be a shared global responsibility.
Executive Director Diong congratulated Nepal on the successful conclusion of the Sagarmatha Sambaad and assured that Nepal would be prioritized in future fund allocations.
Also present on the occasion were Joint Secretary Krishna Prasad Dhakal from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a Joint Secretary from the Ministry of Forests and Environment.
The Fund, established following the decision of COP-27, is intended to support developing countries disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change.
