4 demonstrators killed in police firing in Birgunj, 1 in Kalaiya

BIRGUNJ: At least four demonstrators were killed in police firing in various places of Birgunj of Parsa and one in Kalaiya of neighbouring Bara during violent clashes on Tuesday.

Defying curfew, supporters of the parties affiliated with United Democratic Madhesi Front took to streets and confronted with the security personnel since early morning.

The deceased have been identified as Dharma Raj Singh (30) of Bhawanipur, Maniyari; Bhola Sah (24) of Nagawa, and Dinanath Sah (27) of Bahuari Nautan and Suman Kalwar of Bhusakpur, Parsa.

Singh received bullet on his head when police opened fire on protesters during a clash in Radhemai of Birgunj this afternoon.

The Sah duo and Kalwar were were killed in police action after the protesters tried to capture a local police beat at Nagawa.

Bhola Sah died on the spot while Dinanath Sah breathed died at at the National Medical College where he was taken for treatment.

Likewise, Hifajat Miya died in police firing when the agitators tried to cross the prohibited area at Bharat Chowk of Kalaiya , the district headquarters of Bara, today.

The number of protesters injured in police firing has reached two dozen in Bara and Parsa so far.

Earlier on Monday, Dilip Chaurasiya (28), a supporter of Federal Socialist Party-Nepal from Parsa’s Maniyari VDC, was fatally shot at during a clash near the District Development Committee office.

Chaurasiya was rushed to the Narayani Sub-regional Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.

The UDMF has enforced an indefinite strike in Parsa and neighbouring districts to protest the draft constitution and seven-province federal model proposed by the major parties since August 15.
