Shakya could be the first woman Chief Minister
KATHMANDU, AUGUST 18
Bagmati Province Chief Minister Dormani Paudel is set to tender his resignation.
Paudel's decision follows the government's decision to issue the ordinance to amend the Political Parties Act 2071, aimed at easing the procedure for political parties to split.
Meanwhile, senior leader Ashtalakshmi Shakya has been unanimously elected the Parliamentary Party leader of the CPN-UML in the Provincial Assembly after Paudel's resignation. Paudel hails from the Oli-faction of the UML.
CPN-UML holds a clear majority in the province.
Shakya, who was once a fierce critic of party chair KP Sharma Oli, and belonged to the Nepal-Khanal faction, however, was not happy with the faction's decision that looked at splitting the party and registering a new one.
Paudel's resignation, which will pave way for Shakya's induction as the Chief Minister, will ensure that Nepal will get a first woman provincial head.
