Balendra 'Balen' Shah set to become KMC Mayor, Sunita Dangol's victory sealed too

KATHMANDU, MAY 25

Mayoral candidate Balendra Shah 'Balen' is all set to become the new Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, replacing Bidya Sundar Shakya.

Although the votes of the recently held polls for the top executive post in the metropolis are still being counted, Balen's fate as the new Mayor is sealed as he is over 20,000 votes ahead of his closest contender, while only around 19,000 votes remain to be counted.

The independent candidate has so far received 55,777 votes while Nepali Congress' candidate Sirjana Shrestha is at the second spot with 35,371 votes.

Meanwhile, Keshav Sthapit - who was fielded by the UML - is trailing with 34,626 votes.

As many as 192,000 votes were cast by the metropolis resients in the local level elections held on May 13.

This year, not only Shah, but also a few other independent candidates made headlines with their big win in prominent sub-metropolises including -- Harka Sampang in Dharan; Manoj Kumar Sah in Janakpur; and Gopal 'Gopi' Hamal in Dhangadhi.

Sunita Dangol to take charge as the new deputy mayor

CPN-UML candidate Sunita Dangol is on way to become the deputy mayor of Kathmandu Metropolis by a landslide victory.

While Dangol has thus far received 60,675 votes, her closet competitor, ruling alliance's Rameshwar Shrestha has garnered only 20,686 votes.

Dangol, thus, leads with a wide margin of around 40,000 votes, ensuring the deal for the deputy mayoral candidate.

She has received the most number of popular votes in the polls.
