CoMS Bharatpur conducts kidney transplant

Kathmandu, June 14

College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur, has resumed kidney transplant service.

The college had obtained permission (licence) from the government for kidney transplant about four years ago. It succeeded in kidney transplant for the third time on Monday after it acquired the licence. A surgical team led by Dr Rakesh Barma successfully transplanted a kidney on Bishnu Gopal Batas, 54, a resident of Bhaktapur-6, in three-and-a-half hours. Rijan Beer Joshi, 25, nephew of the patient, was the kidney donor.

“It has been 72 hours after the operation and the patient is doing well. We are extremely happy,” Barma said. He also shared that he would start another transplant soon. Barma further informed that Dr Prabin Joshi, Dr Sudip Raj KC, Dr BhushanTimalsena, Dr Madhav Ghimire and Dr Birendra Yadav were in his team.

Excited after the success of Monday’s transplant, Barma claimed that CoMS would continue delivering kidney transplant service.

“I will continue my service here. This service has been possible because of our long-time engagement and dedication at the hospital,” he said.

Earlier, he was associated with Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Centre in Bhaktapur. He said CoMS will also initiate liver transplant in near future.

Pukar Chandra Shrestha, director at SDNTC, said that it was a matter of pride that kidney transplant service had begun outside the valley.
