Construction of Biratnagar abattoir in limbo

Biratnagar, September 24

Biratnagar Metropolitan City is yet to have a slaughter house in the market area, though its planning had started years ago.

The government had planned to construct a slaughter house at Ashok Chowk and accordingly allocated budget for it in the fiscal 2008-09. The government had then released Rs 60 lakh and then Biratnagar Municipality had set aside Rs 18 lakh for the purpose.

With the budget, the construction of a two-storey slaughter house in the area was in progress., However, the work was halted after a monitoring team deployed from Directorate of Livestock Market Promotion reported some technical errors in the building construction.

Chief of the veterinary department at the metropolis Hiralal Yadav said construction work could not resume due to lack of equipment, adding that Rs 1.24 crore had been allocated for construction in the current fiscal. “The amount will be spent on infrastructure and equipment for the building,” he said.

Consumers are compelled to consume unhygienic meat due to lack of slaughter house in the city. Ill-managed meat shops across the city have been giving foul smell. Mayor of the metropolis Bhim Parajuli said the city was in need of a well-managed slaughter house. “The slaughter house will be brought into operation after completion of the remaining construction work,” he informed.
