Construction of Karnali Corridor picks pace

Bajura, June 4

Construction work on a road section along the Karnali Corridor in Bajura has gained momentum of late.

Construction of around 24-kilometre road section from Pilichaur of Jagannath Rural Municipality to Kawadi of Himali Rural Municipality has been expedited after breaking a dozen of hard rocks. The Nepali Army had taken the responsibility of constructing the road. Locals of Bajura and Humla hope to see positive change in their lifestyle after the completion of the road.

Humla is the only district in the country that has not been connected to a road network yet. After completion of the Karnali corridor, Humla will also be connected to the road network.

Earlier, locals of Himali Rural Municipality had to spend two days travelling to reach the district headquarters from Dhulachaur. Now, with the opening of the track for the Karnali Corridor people can reach the headquarters within five hours.

Himali Rural Municipality Chair Govinda Malla said the price for a quintal of rice was Rs 10,000 three months ago, but the price has decreased by around 60 per cent after vehicles were brought into operation on the newly constructed road. Karnali Corridor is 145 kilometres from Lalu of Kalikot to Sarisalla of Humla. Of the total length, 40 km lies in Kalikot, 44 km in Bajura and the remaining 61 km in Humla district.

Meanwhile, the NA has already constructed 107-km road section and vehicles have been given permission to ply the 71-km stretch up to Dhulachaur.
