KATHMANDU, AUGUST 1
General Secretary of the CPN-UML Ishwar Pokharel today said the demand for having two or three chairpersons in the party wouldn't be met because the party statute had no such option.
The rival faction of the UML led by Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal had floated the idea of having a presidium till the next general convention. Nepal had recently told the leaders of his faction that he had been offered the post of party co-chair by the establishment faction.
Following the party's Standing Committee meeting today, Pokharel told mediapersons that his faction had already said it was ready to revive the party structures and committees that existed before the UML's merger with the CPN-MC. He said efforts to keep party unity intact should be explored in accordance with the same proposition. He added that the party had been holding unity talks with the rival faction.
The party also decided to hold the central committee meeting to discuss the statute convention scheduled for September 12 and 13. Pokharel said the party would hold ward level convention on September 19 and local level convention on September 25.
The UML task force had prepared a 10-point unity proposal but Nepal did not accept it. Addressing the Standing Committee meeting today, party Chair KP Sharma Oli said the rival faction had dislodged his government and formed a rightist government and hence the party should not accept the rival faction. He said the rival faction was promoting anarchy in the party and was neither responsible towards the party nor towards people of the country.
