Sharp rise in domestic visitors attributed to promotion, infrastructure, and trekking appeal
KATHMANDU, JULY 27
Tourist arrivals in Dhorpatan-the only hunting reserve in Nepal-have seen a significant rise over the past year, with over 23,000 visitors recorded in the fiscal year 2081/82.
According to the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve Office, the number of tourists increased by more than 8,000 compared to the previous fiscal year. Ranger Sagar Subedi said that 23,692 visitors were recorded this year, up from 15,573 in the previous year.
Of the total visitors, 213 were foreign nationals outside the SAARC region, while only 12 were from SAARC member countries. The remaining majority were domestic tourists.
Subedi attributed the rise in visitor numbers to increased promotional efforts, improved infrastructure, and growing interest in trekking routes within the reserve. He also noted that the uptick in tourism has led to increased revenue.
Nepali citizens are required to pay an entry fee of Rs 100 to enter the reserve. Over Rs 2 million was collected from entrance fees in the last fiscal year alone.
While foreign tourists typically visit Dhorpatan for trophy hunting experiences, domestic travelers are drawn to its scenic beauty and cultural landmarks such as the Dhorpatan Valley, Niseldhor, Dhorbarah Temple, Bukipatan, and Jaljala.
Ram Bahadur Gharti, an operator of the Dhorpatan Community Homestay, said that around two dozen hotels and homestays are now operational in the area. Tourists can also access the valley through tour packages, making travel more convenient.
