KATHMANDU, JANUARY 16

Earthquake security exhibition will be held tomorrow at Kamal Pokhari as part of the regular plan to celebrate the 25th National Earthquake Safety Day which was supposed to be organised today.

Earlier, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office had scheduled a special celebration of the Day at Earthquake Memorial Monument at Bhugol Park in New Road in the presence of Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane.

But it was cancelled at the last moment after the government announced a public holiday for today to mourn the fatal aviation accident in Pokhara that killed all 72 on board, including four crew members.

According to KMC Spokesperson Nabin Manandhar, some officials of the KMC gathered at Bhugol Park in silence to symbolically mark Earthquake Safety Day. However, other programmes related to spreading awareness about earthquake shall continue for the next few days in the prescheduled time.

The Main Celebration Dissemination Committee which is responsible for informing more and more people about the earthquake, its impact and measures to protect oneself from earthquake will coordinate to organise the exhibition tomorrow.

Every year, National Earthquake Safety Day is observed on Magh 2 in the Nepali calendar in commemoration of the 1934 deadly earthquake in Nepal. The government has planned to observe the Day with the theme of 'Earthquake Safe Infrastructure, Basis of Safe Life' this year.

Although Nepal lies in an earthquake-prone zone, not much has been done to mitigate the situation when an earthquake strikes the country.
