KATHMANDU, JUNE 12

Experts have raised concerns over increasing heat-related risks in the wake of rising temperatures, urging the government to introduce appropriate policies and adopt strategic measures.

Speaking at a programme organized by the Nepal Red Cross Society and the International Red Cross in the federal capital on Thursday, Pragya Pradhan from UN-Habitat emphasized the need for policies that prioritize heatwave victims. "Until recently, the issue was not taken seriously," she said, stressing the importance of establishing mechanisms for relief and medical treatment in cases of severe heat-related health risks.

Meanwhile, Dr. Prakash Budhathoki, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population, noted that the government would classify heatwaves as an emergency only when a significant number of people are affected. He added that additional measures, such as early warning systems, would be implemented accordingly.

Similarly, Dinesh Prasad Bhatta, CEO of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, stated that the government is preparing a comprehensive work plan to address heat-related disasters.

He highlighted initiatives such as public awareness campaigns, the establishment of cooling centers, and the distribution of drinking water.
