KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 21

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has reiterated that the government consistently upholds citizens' right to freedom of expression.

Speaking at the launch of Byaktitwa Yogdan, a book based on the biography of businessman and social worker Rajesh Kaji Shrestha, on Friday, PM Oli pointed out that some individuals who were involved in drafting past legislation are now protesting against the Social Media Bill. "TikTok was banned in the past, and we lifted the ban," he said, adding that the very political party responsible for restricting social media is now advocating for freedom of speech.

He emphasized that activities carried out under the pretext of freedom, but which disrupt peace, social harmony, and national integrity, are unacceptable. "It is wrong to provoke people and spread baseless accusations," he added.

According to him, the exercise of one's rights must not infringe upon the rights of others. Addressing allegations that he had stashed money in a Swiss bank, PM Oli remarked, "Why would I need such wealth? I require no luxury-just enough food to sustain myself. I have no reason to hide any assets. My life is open and transparent."

He further stated that it is not part of Nepal's culture to create unnecessary controversy, spread confusion, or engage in defamation.

The Prime Minister asserted that national prosperity is achievable only through good governance. He noted that the present government is actively formulating laws and accelerating development initiatives to ensure progress.

Expressing confidence in the book's impact, PM Oli remarked that the biography of Shrestha-a leading businessman who played a crucial role in the institutional development of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce-would serve as an inspiration for the younger generation.

The book is published by the Ishwarlal Foundation.
