KATHMANDU, JUNE 4
The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression is being observed today to highlight the physical, mental, and emotional suffering endured by children affected by conflict and violence.
The United Nations established the day on August 19, 1982, following an emergency session on Palestine, in response to the killing and maiming of Palestinian and Lebanese children during Israeli attacks.
The observance underscores the UN's commitment to child protection under the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Despite progress, children worldwide continue to face armed conflict, extremism, exploitation, and abuse.
The 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda aims to end all forms of violence against children, with Goal 16.2 specifically targeting the elimination of abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and all types of violence against children.
The UN emphasizes that preventing grave violations and removing the root causes of child involvement in conflict are key to ensuring lasting protection.
