Manahari Rural Municipality ends gender bias on wages

Manahari Rural Municipality has decided to implement the equal wage system for males and females.

The fourth village assembly held recently under the rural municipality Chairman Ekraj Upreti decided the equal wage system.

Earlier, District Coordination Committee meeting had decided to implement equal wage system across the district as a measure to counter gender based discrimination at work.

The coordination meeting held among the chiefs, deputy chiefs and chief administrative officers from all the local levels expressed commitment to implement the same wages system in the district. The rural municipality took the decision as part of the commitment.

Chairman Upreti said the equal wage system would be enforced as per the law of the land. “We are just trying to implement the system stipulated by the law,” he added. He said the fourth village assembly meeting of the rural municipality had decided to implement the equal wage system between males and females working in agriculture and construction sectors. Chairman Upreti said Society Reform Act, Local Health and Sanitation Act and Finance Act were approved by the assembly meeting.

According to Chairman Upreti, liquor shops that had obtained permission from the authority concerned could sell liquor between 5:00pm and 8:00pm.

Similarly, no one in the rural municipality is allowed to offer cash and other gifts worth more than Rs 1,000 in weddings as per the Society Reform Act. Chairman Upreti said religious ceremonies, such as Saptaha and Mahayagya, cannot be organised in the area to raise funds.
