KATHMANDU, MAY 16

The Nepali Congress leads the May 13 local election by winning 11 posts of mayors of municipalities and 61 chiefs of rural municipalities on the third day of vote counting.

The CPN-UML is a distant second with three posts of mayors of municipalities and 44 chiefs of rural municipalities.

As per Election Commission's report by 7:00pm today, NC is leading in 205 local governments, including 96 municipalities and 109 rural municipalities, whereas CPN-UML is leading in 57 municipalities and 60 rural municipalities.

CPN-Maoist Centre is placed third after winning top posts in two municipalities and 34 rural municipalities.

It is leading in 19 municipalities and 49 rural municipalities.

CPN (Unified Socialist) has won top posts in two rural municipalities and is leading in five rural municipalities.

Out of 6,743 wards in all 753 local governments, the NC has secured victory in 1,219, the CPN-UML in 933, CPN-MC in 521, CPN (US) in 76, and fringe parties and independent candidates in 206.

In Kathmandu Metropolitan City, independent mayoral candidate, rapper Balen Shah, continues to lead for the third Day. By 7:30pm today, Balen had secured 7,771 votes with CPN UML's Keshav Sthapit trailing with 4,113 votes.

In Lalitpur Metropolitan City, outgoing mayor Chiribabu Maharjan is leading with 4,730 votes, followed by Hari Krishna Byanjankar of CPN-UML with 1,744.

The race for much-hyped mayor's post of Bharatpur Municipality in Chitwan is being led by CPN-MC's Renu Dahal (5,039 votes), followed by CPN-UML's Bijay Subedi (5,027 votes).

In Biratnagar, NC's Nagesh Koirala continues to lead the race for mayor's post with 5,532 votes. In Pokhara, CPN (US)'s Dhanraj Acharya, who is supported by the ruling alliance, leads the race with 5,369 votes.
