New constructions banned near Phewa lake

Pokhara, August 26:

A meeting of representatives of eight political parties, Pokhara Valley City Development Committee, Kaski DDC and the Phewa Lake Conservation Committee today decided to prevent the construction of new structures in places that lie 65 metres from the Phewa lake. The decision to this effect was taken on the third day of a meeting held at the DDC.

The District Council had passed a provision restricting new constructions in the area lying 65 metres from the Phewa Lake. Protesting the provision, locals of the area had been staging a protest for three days. The meeting decided to demarcate the lake area and demolish the structures within 65 metres once the Pokhara municipality comes up with a working plan on providing compensation to the people, Kaski LDO Kedarnath Sharma said.

The structures built within the 65-metre perimeter will be demolished after preparing a working plan, Kaski president of the Nepali Congress-Democratic, Soviyat Bahadur Adhikari, said.

The locals postponed their protest programme after the decision was taken to demolish the existing structures after the preparation of the working plan.
