Nima Nuru Sherpa has been elected the new president of Nepal Mountaineering Association after securing a win in the election that concluded on Friday.

Sherpa won the election with a huge margin of 613 votes against his rival candidate Rajendra Man Shrestha. Sherpa garnered 735 votes while Shrestha only received 122 votes. Out of 1205 voters, 905 cast their votes, according to the election committee.

Similarly, Thakur Raj Pande has been elected as senior vice-president, Ang Dawa Sherpa as first vice-president, Dawa Yangzum Sherpa as second vice-president, Mohan Lamsal as general secretary, Dhana Bahadur Gurung as secretary and Mukti Pande as treasurer.

Nima Nuru-led panel was unanimously endorsed by all-party organisations to send a message of solidarity and support for the betterment of the country's mountaineering sector. "Nima Nuru has been elected by securing over 80 percent votes," the committee said.

Aang Dawa Sherpa, Kisaan Gurung, Singi Lama, Pitambar Gurung, Rajendra Bahadur Lama, Ram Chandra Dhamala, Namgyal Jungbu Sherpa, Pasang Dawa Sherpa, Dinesh Tamang, Nima Doma Sherpa and Doma Sherpa have all been elected as members of the association, Chief Election Officer Gokul Prasad Burlakoti informed.

"I am committed to work for the betterment of the tourism and mountaineering industry while this victory has also had a significant meaning," NMA president Sherpa said, reminding that this was the first time in the history of NMA that all political parties come together to field a common panel.

As many as four people are going to be selected from the red book in the election that is being conducted today. NMA, Nepal's only alpine club, has been managing collection of taxes from 27 small mountains in the country.
