DAMAULI, JANUARY 1

Senior Nepali Congress leader Ramchandra Paudel has said the onus is on political parties to clarify to people about the American assistance package Millennium Challenge Corporation.

Speaking to journalists in his home district today, Paudel said political parties had to clarify whether the pact was against national consensus. "If we keep this issue unresolved for long, it will create more confusion among people, so parties must resolve this issue fast," he said. On a different note, the ruling coalition leader condemned the opposition CPN-UML's act of obstructing the Parliament indefinitely.

"If they think the speaker is wrong, CPN-UML must muster courage to impeach the speaker, otherwise, it's high time they stopped obstructing the House and preventing discussion on issues of national interest," he said, adding that indefinitely obstructing the House could put republicanism at risk. Paudel also said he had to back away from the race for party presidency after reaching consensus on a unanimous candidate and after lobbying for transformation of the party failed.

"It would be good if we could forward only one candidate representing the agenda of party transformation, but when all four were insistent on contesting in the election by refusing to support one or the other candidate, I had to back away from the race," he said.

When asked if he was up for leaving politics altogether, he said it was only a pause, not a full stop. He also demanded that the factionalism in his party should end for good.
