INTERNATIONAL LABOUR DAY

KATHMANDU, MAY 1

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has pledged to compulsorily and strictly implement the Contribution-based Social Security Scheme from the upcoming fiscal year.

In his message to all Nepali workers at home and abroad on the occasion of International Labour Day, also known as May Day and International Workers' Day, here today, PM Dahal reiterated that he would take initiative to strictly and compulsorily enforce the scheme in industries, factories and offices.

In the message, PM Dahal vowed to incorporate at least 2 per cent workers for the awards and honours annually conferred by various organs of the State. "Furthermore, I express my commitment to make the monitoring mechanism more active to legitimise and ensure services and facilities for workers by clearly defining their role, responsibilities and rights," said PM Dahal.

On the occasion, PM Dahal also wished for health, peace, prosperity and progress to all working Nepali sisters, brothers, mothers and fathers in the country and abroad. The head of the state shared that he had directed all the government agencies and concerned agencies to provide occupational uniform to all the workers for their safety as well as to provide them proper training to operate modern machines and tools in a bid to make unskilled and untrained workers working in risky situations trained and skilled.

"I vow to stand up for the Nepali workers community, especially farmers and workers. We have a historic responsibility to usher the Nepali working-class citizens towards a new era of prosperity and social justice. I will relentlessly work to deliver on this responsibility."

The International Labour Day (May Day) is celebrated on May 1 worldwide, including in Nepal, in commemoration of the workers' movement in Chicago of the USA in 1886 that demanded respect and rights for workers.
